Interview with Fritz Harder (ESR 8)

What does your research project focus on?

My PhD research focuses on the impact of advanced age on drug absorption, particularly investigating the role of intestinal drug transporters and drug-metabolizing enzymes.

How did the AGePOP network impact your PhD experience?

The AGePOP network greatly enhanced my PhD experience by helping me build a broad and strong professional network. Through engaging workshops, annual meetings, and virtual sessions, I gained valuable training in scientific, professional, operational, and communication skills. Presenting my research to an audience of scientific peers boosted my confidence in my work, while the feedback I received deepened my understanding of alternative scientific approaches. Overall, the network has been invaluable in shaping both my research skills and professional development.

How was your MSCA ITN training different to local PhD programmes? Which training was particularly useful for you?

Being part of the AGePOP ITN provided me with a unique, internationally oriented research and training experience. It allowed me to embrace mobility, explore interdisciplinary opportunities, and connect with a global network of experts and peers. One of the most valuable aspects was gaining insights into the differences between the workflows in academia and industry, which I found both fascinating and eye-opening. I’m particularly grateful to the Merck KGaA team for their invaluable support, which greatly enhanced my understanding of industry processes and perspectives. These experiences have broadened my outlook and significantly contributed to my professional growth.

What are your plans for the future?

I’m excited about the possibility of continuing my scientific journey in the pharmaceutical industry. However, with over 12 months remaining in my programme, I’m open to how my interests and career goals may evolve over the course of my remaining research.

What message would you like to give other early-stage researchers considering a PhD?

For early-stage researchers considering a PhD, my advice is to work smart, pace yourself, and remember to take breaks. Enjoy the journey—it can be challenging, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. Embrace the process and find joy in your growth as a researcher.
