Interview with Elma Edwina (ESR 7)

What has your research project focused on?

My research focuses on gastrointestinal physiology and pharmacokinetics of commonly used drugs which carry high-risk and have narrow therapeutic windows, in geriatric patients aged 75 and older. My work specifically aims to deepen our understanding of drug behavior in this vulnerable population, ultimately guiding safer and more effective dosing practices.

What were the surprises and highlights of your road to a PhD?

The PhD journey is full of surprises. The research direction often evolves over time due to more interesting findings or gaps. It also requires patience and resilience, as there were times when hard work did not yield immediate results—but that is part of research. These setbacks, though challenging, often turn into valuable learning experiences.

How did the AGePOP network impact your PhD experience?

Through the network, I found opportunities for collaboration, feedback, and networking, which helped me stay motivated. Overall, it made the journey more collaborative, enriching both my research and personal growth.

How was your MSCA ITN training different to local PhD programmes? Which training was particularly useful for you?

The MSCA ITN training provided extensive networking opportunities by connecting me with researchers, institutions, and industries. The program supports mobility across countries and sectors, from academia to industry, and broadened my global perspective. The mix between research and transferable skills training enhanced my expertise, giving me a strong foundation for my future career.

What are your plans for the future?

I strive to establish optimal drug treatments for special populations. I believe everyone deserves access to the best possible care, tailored to their unique needs.

What message would you like to give other early-stage researchers considering a PhD?

Embarking on a PhD is like stepping onto unknown ground to uncover new insights. That’s what makes it challenging and rewarding. So, embrace the journey and stay curious.
